            Education Department

            Education Class

The Education Department has a two-fold mission: To prepare students for the teaching profession and to better equip current teachers.

Teacher certification is completed by fulfilling all coursework set forth in Columbia College's state approved certification matrices, including student teaching, satisfactorily completing all state assessments, and submitting a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) application for the initial certificate; degree completion (which can be completed with Columbia College) is one of the DESE application requirements.

"Where do I start?" It's as easy as 1-2-3!

            1. Choose your program:

If you're not sure which program would be best for you, try this exercise:

            2. Apply to Columbia College

Once you've determined the program that fits your needs, it's time to apply to Columbia College.

Undergraduate programs (like the BEACON and Undergraduate Post-Bacc programs) require an undergraduate application through your location*.

Graduate programs (like the MAT, M.Ed, "add-on" certificates, Alternative Certification or the MAT Post-Baccalaureate programs) require a Graduate Studies application. (Note: Graduate-level courses are not currently offered at our nationwide venues.)

            3. Visit with your advisor

Once you're admitted, you will have access to an advisor who will help you plan out your program. You're not in this alone! It's recommended that you visit with your advisor often to make sure you remain on track.

*The Teacher Certification Programs at Columbia College are available through our traditional campus and evening program in Columbia as well as through two of our extended Missouri venues – Lake Ozark and St. Louis.

Students seeking teacher certification must be admitted to one of the locations listed above. Many EDUC courses include field experiences that require hours in a public or accredited private school. These placements will be arranged with the schools in the area of your teacher certification location (up to a 90-mile radius).. The MAT and M.Ed. degrees are available at Columbia, MO and online.
